Standard Huawei Pura 80 tipped to use side-mounted fingerprint sensor
Recent reports suggest that the standard Huawei Pura 80 model could come with a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, while the high-end variants may adopt the latest ultrasonic fingerprint technology.
Earlier rumors indicated that Huawei was developing its own ultrasonic fingerprint sensor for the Pura 80 series, with preparations for this technology beginning last year. Now, a Weibo tipster claims that the company is testing two fingerprint authentication methods for the lineup: an under-display ultrasonic sensor and a side-mounted option.
Both unlocking mechanisms are expected to be complemented by a 2D face recognition system. It is likely that Huawei will reserve the in-display ultrasonic fingerprint sensor for premium variants such as the Pura 80 Pro+ or Ultra models, while the standard version may opt for a side-mounted scanner. However, official confirmation is still pending.
Huawei previously introduced the Mate 70 series with a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, despite the growing adoption of under-screen technology. Given its success, the company may continue this approach with the Pura 80 lineup

In addition to the Pura series, a tipster revealed that Huawei’s upcoming Pocket 3 and Nova 14 models will also incorporate a side-mounted fingerprint sensor paired with a 2D face recognition system, ensuring a stable and reliable unlocking experience.
Capacitive side fingerprint scanners operate using an array of tiny capacitor circuits, capturing the unique ridges and valleys of a fingerprint with precision. This technology is not only easily accessible but also offers greater security compared to traditional unlocking methods.
While the Pura 80 series will primarily emphasize advanced imaging capabilities, Huawei is expected to introduce some intriguing technological enhancements across its new devices.
The Pura 80 lineup is rumored to launch between May and June 2025. Until then, more leaks and exciting details about the flagship models are likely to surface. Stay tuned for updates!
